How does a PPO plan work?
As a member of a PPO plan, you'll be encouraged to use the insurance company's network of preferred doctors and you usually won't need to choose a primary care physician. No matter which healthcare provider you choose, in-network healthcare services will be covered at a higher benefit level than out-of-network services. It's important to check if you provider accepts your health plan so you receive the highest level of benefit coverage. Unlike an HMO, a PPO health insurance plan allows people the freedom to get care from any provider—in or out of the PPO network. That includes any doctor, hospital, provider or specialist.
Although it is usually more cost-effective to visit in-network providers, seeing out of network providers is still an option. Unlike HMO plans, PPO plans do not require use of a Primary Care Physician (PCP) and do not require referrals prior to seeing a specialist.
PPO health insurance plans typically have an annual deductible to pay before the insurance carrier begins covering medical expenses. Additionally, there are often co-payments for medical services or a patient may be required to cover a predetermined percentage of the total charges for some medical bills.
A PPO plan may be right for you if:
-You want the freedom to visit a specialist without a referral from a primary care physician (PCP)
-You have interest in seeing out of network healthcare providers
-You have interest in having a portion of out-of-network claims to be covered by your insurance company
